Swedish Place-names in North America

Front Cover
Southern Illinois University Press, 1985 - Reference - 372 pages

The more than 1,000 Swedish-American place-names found by Otto Robert Landelius provide hard evidence of a distinct Swedish flavor permeating the map of North America.

The combined aim of the author, the translator, and the editor has been to identify and document as comprehensively as possible those place-names in the United States and Canada that directly or indirectly originate from place-names in Sweden, from Swedish people, or from Swedish culture. Landelius recorded not only the place-name and its location but also supplied information concerning the development of various places and persons connected with them. The result is a generous sampling of Swedish cultural history on North American soil.
