Powell (history, Cumberland Coll.) has collated the work of over 300 scholars to create an encyclopedic survey of military history that includes wars, battles, military and political biographies, and military terms and definitions. Ranging over five volumes from ancient times to the 21st century, the encyclopedia contains some 1500 articles, 300 photographs, 75 maps, and several specialized indexes. All the entries (most of which are at least a page long) are signed and feature a See also reference and a brief but comprehensive bibliography. The coverage is both universal (including the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East) and current; biography subjects include the mujahedin and Osama bin Laden, and entries can be found on jihad, germ warfare, and terrorism. The most comprehensive single work on military history in print, this is an excellent starting point for anyone (high school age and above) seeking basic information about the causes and effects of just about any significant military event in recorded history.
