One of the pivotal scifi works of the 20th century. I read it when published in 1974, and have been re-reading it ever since. It's up there with Stranger In A Strange Land by Heinlein, The Foundation Series by Asimov, The Uplift Series by Brin, Ender's Game by Card, etc.

My favorite science fiction book, period. The alternate universe is fleshed out well, there are a minimum of magic technologies (that both make the future possible and are vitally important to the plot).
Plus the First Contact story is handled so well, with great imagination and depth. You won't be able to read this book slowly.

A brilliant and gripping book. One of the best jobs of creating a truly alien life form, culture and civilization, rather than the usual "aliens" who act just like human beings who happen to look ... Read full review

The Mote in God's Eye is probably the finest contemplation of a human-alien first contact that I have ever read. The story deals out a sizable cast of characters without seeming overwhelming. Mote ... Read full review
