"The time [of this novel] is 1830--the place, the little city of Saint Pierre on the largest of the Channel Islands. The main characters are Sophie and Octavius Le Patourel, parents of the heroines--Marianne ... and Marguerite ... both in love with handsome William Ozanne, whose father Sophie had loved in her youth. In addition, there is a revealing picture of pioneer life in New Zealand." Huntting.

One of my top three books. The blurb is accurate, for once! Intriguing plot and characters, beautifully written, superlative similes. Read full review

I read (most) of this book as a teen, and enjoyed it very much, but it was borrowed and I did not get to finish it. It is nice to have closure. It is lovingly told, as are all of Elizabeth Goudge's books, with beautiful prose. Read full review
