When his irresponsible younger brother "borrows" his mother's heirloom diamonds and then has them stolen from him in return, Oliver Chance, Earl of Spense, reluctantly agrees to rescue his brother once again. In a desperate attempt to get the jewels back before his mother discovers their absence during the Christmas holidays, Oliver seeks the help of Sarah Cresswell, daughter of the fugitive Devilish Dandy. But Sarah is not the flamboyant sleuth he expects, and as they work together to unmask the thief, he is captivated by her intelligence, frankness, and perceptiveness and ultimately finds himself in love with a scandal-tainted woman whom society will never accept. And then the Devilish Dandy interferes. Likable, interesting characters, good chemistry between the protagonists, and a clever series premise (the first of a projected trilogy about the three daughters of a notorious jewel thief) lend appeal to this lively, lightly humorous tale.
