I have been reading this book since I was 19 years old and I'm 72 now. I've worn out more copies than I've given away. It has opened my mind and kicked me out of the box of thought and into the present. If I had a Bible, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones would be it. It's good to read it and be aware that these stories and koans have been circulating for hundreds of years, some for more than 2000 years. They seem on the face to be contradictory and nonsensical. But if you read them and assume that they must have some teaching embedded in them, and read them again and question the meaning, something will happen to you in your life and a koan or story will burst open like a flower in bloom and you'll understand. A few years later, it may bloom again into a different understanding. This book is filled with little miracles, the greatest of which is everyday life.

My first initiation into Zen simplified - i return to it time and again throughout my life. I see it as a handbook, a manual for spirituality in the new age. The section on 'Catch Bull' is particularly relevant to where a lot of people are on the Path of spirituality and so it makes sense that Cat Stevens named one of his albums by and of the same title. The heart of Zen is timeless and finds its voice in every century echoing through the collective spirit of humanity.
