A lovely book, in the style of old historians, who were as much story tellers as they were knowledgeable. The author tells the tale of a great change of thought during the Victorian period.
Although the language may seem a bit distant to the modern ear, if you give it a chance, it will speak to you.
The great debate between Huxley and Bishop Wilberforce is portrayed here with more skill than any other account of the event. Read it if you want to understand what it was like to be there.
