It is conceivable that an alert faculty member, by anticipating and forestalling the dispute, could have deprived the students of this learning opportunity. Sir Walter Raleigh, an erstwhile professor at Oxford University, is reported by Ord-way Tead to have said: "A certain amount of freedom to go wrong is essential in a university where men are learning, not to obey, but to choose." Students participating in the discussions that followed the flare-up between the Student Executive Board and the Prattler had an opportunity to explore many important questions. The issue of government vs. the press--the obligations and rights of government in relation to a free press and the responsibilities of a free press toward government and toward the lay citizen--is an issue of significance not only on the college campus. Whether the learning acquired through this single experience was significant is difficult to determine. It is much less difficult to observe the learning opportunities afforded by the experience and to conclude that as experiences and opportunities are multiplied, the probability that significant learning takes place is increased. Capitalizing on the varied interests of the modern student body, student government can take on part of the job of coaching youth for its role in modern society. The Harvard University Committee has stated: Student government, within limits, is valuable in shaping the quality of later citizenship. It is only when the student faces the actual difficulties of governing by democracy that he begins to appreciate the complexity of a free society.
