"Westermann's commentary has the merit of taking a definite stand in the hermeneutical debate. In the tradition of Gunkel, it takes full advantage of the methods of form criticism and of the phenomenological study of religion. Again and again Westermann opens up dimensions of meaning which are not only relevant for theology but for human existence in the modern world."-- Bernhard W. AndersonJournal of Biblical Literature

Very good commentary!

User Review  - J M Jahn -

This commentary by Claus Westermann on Genesis 1-11 is one of the most detailed exegetical commentaries ever, indeed, the whole three volumes on Genesis are something to behold. This commentary should serve as the foundation for research into Genesis 1-11. Read full review

Helpful in some places, frustrating in others. Doesn't get to the message of the text. Read full review
