About the author (2009)

Thomas Bowlder (1754-1825) was an English physician and minister, better known for his popular Family Shakespeare books, which sold through many editions. His editorial activities gave rise to the term bowdlerize, which means to expurgate a book by deleting sections considered indelicate.
