About the author (2001)

Biographer William M. Murphy was born in Astoria, Queens, New York. He received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Harvard University. During World War II, he served in the Navy and helped create a manual on the use of rockets in aircraft anti-submarine warfare. He taught English at Union College in Schenectady, New York from 1946 until retiring in 1983. He is best known for writing biographies of William Butler Yeats' family including Prodigal Father: The Life of John Butler Yeats (1978) and Family Secrets: William Butler Yeats and His Relatives (1995). He died on September 26, 2008 at the age of 92.
