More personal insights on Lincoln. One of the things that comes clear as I have read many books on Lincoln is that no one - other than perhaps Joshua Speed - was truly close to him. He was an enigma - other than to Mary . . . who did know him well.

William C. Davis has authored more than 25 books on the Civil War, including Jefferson Davis, Breckinridge, and "A Government of Our Own": The Making of the Confederacy (Free Press, 1994). His most recent book, Three Roads to the Alamo, was a Main Selection of the History Book Club. He lives in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
