I am glad this excellent book is still in print. I saw it 40 years ago, and it became the inspiration for
my husband and me to build "our own adobe" house from 1983-1989. We built it with our own four
hands, as the Allers did, after taking courses in electricity, plumbing, and masonry at the local community college. My husband did the electricity, the plumbing, and the solar window calculations.
I did the masonry (that was the heavy work). We paid for all materials as we built, and when we moved
in, the entire house was paid for. We have now lived in this house for 23 years, and it has not had any
really serious problems.
Building it was the most interesting thing I ever did (and I am a woman who hates hard physical labor).
Also I was already fifty years old when we started. It was a smart move on our part, and I have never
regretted doing it. Wherever the Allers are now, I owe them much gratitude for writing their book.
