Mihaly, the son of a bourgeois family in Budapest, is haunted by nostalgia for his bohemian youth. He seeks escape in his marriage to Erzsi. On honeymoon in Italy they are accidentally separated and Mihaly starts a mystical and dazzling journey, first in archaic Umbria and then plunging into a sensual Rome, where death and eroticism converge. Antal Szerb was born in Budapest in 1901. Graduating in German and English, he published books on drama and poetry, studies of Ibsen and Blake, and histories of English, Hungarian, and world literature. He died in the Nazi labour camp at Balf in January 1945. Len Rix was raised in Zimbabwe, educated at Cambridge and now teaches at Manchester Grammar School.
