As the UK education system repositions itself for the 21st century, this book addresses some of the most important challenges facing higher education and brings together contributions from a wide range of stakeholders, including the government, academics, the Quality Assurance Agency, unions, students and employers. The organizing principle of the book is the notion of a compact - an issue central to the Dearing Report 1997 - and it identifies and examines the separate responsibilities and/or contributions of each stakeholder in respect of the compact.This volume offers a vital contribution to the debate on the future of higher education and presents an overall view that we are moving away from an age of vision to one of instrumentality. Higher education has to live by the uncertainty principle and it is essential that we achieve, through compacts of one kind or another, a fundamental reworking of the way higher education is understood into the new millennium.
