Uncontrollable Beauty: Toward a New Aesthetics
Bill Beckley, David Shapiro
Allworth Press, 2001 - Art - 423 pages
An art anthology about beauty. In this collection of essays, a group ofrtists, critics and literati offer their reflections on the question ofeauty - past, present and future. The range of these works encompasses Meyerchapiro's sceptical argument on perfection, contributions from artists asrofound as Louise Bourgeois and Agnes Martin, and reflections of critics, urators and philosophers on the problems of beauty and relativism. Theolume also contains the insights of some of today's innovative art theorists, uch as Dave Hickey, Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, Peter Schjeldahl and Juliaristeva, as well as the writings of critics such as Arthur Danto, Donalduspit and Carter Ratcliff. These writers and thinkers underline how theense of beauty today is an inescapable domain of multiple perspectives.

A rambling wreck of a book, but still very engaging. The writers are articulate (usually) and insightful (usually) and often, like art critics tend to be, very snarky (almost always). The essay On Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief is worth the price of admission just to watch the cat fight.

Could have benefited from some serious editing of essays... The first part "theory" is well put together but the second two sections are rather hit and miss.
