Beter than the first of the trio, this is the funniest. Laugh-out-loud funny. Like Fernet Branca, it is well-written and easy to read. It has wit and warmth and I was sad to reach its end, sadness that was lifted when I found the third and last of the series. Read full review

About the author (2006)

James Hamilton-Paterson lives and works in Italy. He is the author of several novels, including Loving Monsters and Gerontius, winner of the Whitbread Best First Novel Award in 1989, a collection of essays dedicated to the lost grandeur of the sea entitled Seven-Tenths, and several non-fiction books including Americas Boy, a study of Ferdinand Marcos and the Philippines. He is also the author of two books of poetry and a regular contributor to Granta. He has also published Cooking With Fernet Branca.
