About the author (2005)

Leslie Heywood teaches creative writing and critical theory at the State University of New York, Binghamton. She is the author of the memoir Pretty Good for a Girl (The Free Press), which was named a breakthrough book by Lingua Franca. She has published in Prairie Schooner, The Connecticut Review, The Paterson Literary Review, and many others. She is also the author of Dedication to Hunger: The Anorexic Aesthetic in Modern Culture; Built to Win: The Female Athlete as Cultural Icon, and Bodymakers: A Cultural Anatomy of Women's Bodybuilding. The Proving Grounds (Red Hen Press) is her first book of poetry.
