I'd love it if someone could prove to me that Doctorow wasn't sucking down LSD out of a PEZ dispenser when he wrote this novel. I normally enjoy his writing, but this one was a real chore for me to get through and I was left at the end wondering why I even bothered... Maybe someone smarter can enlighten me about the brilliance I completely missed in this novel?

The real rating: 3.5 I love the book, really satisfies my craving of odd stories. It's just that, I don't really understand it. I want a clear insight: (view spoiler)[was Billy as evil as Davey? What ... Read full review

Read it for the prose and the ideas, both of which are gorgeous. This, unfortunately, reads like an early draft of a really good book. This is a hard book to review, and many of the others say it ... Read full review

I started reading this book a couple of times, but just recently completed a successful run at it. I enjoy it - yet it wasn't quite a four-star read for me, though it was wonderfully inventive and ... Read full review

Something of "100 Years of Solitude" with wings, no tails or navels, in less than a generation. The ambivalence of names. Complexity of familial relationships. When is a curse a blessing. The ever present dose of Cory's politics, which I enjoy, but my 12-yr-old finds insufferably pedantic. Read full review
