The European Automobile Industry: Multi-level Governance, Policy and Politics
The automobile industry has been transformed in the 30 years from 1968 to 1998, and illustrates some of the most significant consequences of globalization. The dramatic increase in the level of imports of Japanese cars in the 1970s transformed the European motor industry. However subsequent developments have been varied. On the one hand several Japanese car manufacturers now have centres of production in Europe. On the other, many European motor companies have tried to emulate Japanese manufacturing techniques in order to remain competitive. This book presents an analysis of some of the most important of those changes, focusing on the response of Europe's policy makers. It analyzes government-industry relations at both national and transnational levels, demonstrating how national policy instruments have been eroded by regional political and economic integration. There has been a significant and irreversible shift in the locus of decision-making power from nation states to the regional level in the automobile sector.
