Review: Nineteen EightyFour

Editorial Review - Bookreporter.com

NINETEEN EIGHTYFOUR revealed George Orwell as one of the twentieth century's greatest mythmakers. While the totalitarian system that provoked him into writing it has since passed into oblivion, his harrowing cautionary tale of a man trapped in a political nightmare has had the opposite fate: its relevance and power to disturb our complacency seem to grow decade by decade. In Winston Smith's ... Read full review

One of the best books of the 20th Century. I don't think totalitarian regimes totally dig it, though.

I consider that this book should be compulsory reading for politicians of all European parliaments, and more so the unelected bureaucrats and technocrats of the European Union e.g. Manuel Barroso, Herman Von Rompuy etc., The increasing hegemony of Germany through its Chancellor Angela Merkel is frightening
Already we are well down the road of un-elected control of Europe, Greece and Italy for example.
Governments although “elected” are ignoring the wishes of the electorate.
It doesn’t matter if you vote for, each party is the same, except they say things in a different way, but with the same result, more and more integration with the EUSSR.
This book is a warning that The State is becoming totalitarian.

I think modern world leaders should read this book (if they haven't already) and realise that it describes our society as it can be in a very near future.

An excellent book. Although written in 1948 you can see parallels to todays society in every page.

The most gut wrenching and 'Bowel waterer' book ever written.
A book of sheer terror that makes you think and eventually will turn you mad as it explains the truth about power.
O'Brien examples are
everywhere in society with the subtly that it should get across to you.
Of course we want order but order within liberty and Orwell explains the sheer gaul of the oppressors in not only fear but eventual capture, torture and more likely ' vapourisation'. not in a death sense but in rumour, hate and possible false imprisonment.
Its a book thats ingenuity which will keep you thinking for the rest of your life of decisions and possibly it will ruin lives.
Your life will never be the same again when reading and understanding Orwells suffering of writing this book
Good luck

The charactors in the book, the setting, the expressions, all are interesting and educational for me.I highly appreciate the author for his ability to understand the world of politics and sharing his predictions about the future. Thank you goodle, for enabling us to have access to these resources.

This one is ONLY FOR ARDENT READER. All casual reader might not like it, and most probably the new bees will certainly wont.
Its a hardcore, taut political book describing the every nook and cranny
of "CAPITALISM"
The terms described "doublethink, thoughcrime, newspeak" etc...are just excellent.
Considering the period it was written it, it really stands as a firm and epitome on its subject til date...
