Second Opinions: Sixty Psychotherapy Patients Evaluate Their TherapistsLee Kassan interviewed sixty patients about their experiences in psychotherapy and found that they often told him things they had never told their therapists. The book is divided into three main sections: "The Beginning" covers the decision to enter treatment, the selection of the therapist, and initial sessions; "The Treatment" deals with patients and therapist behavior in the course of therapy; "The Ending" probes the reasons for stopping, what happened afterward, and feelings about the overall experience as seen with hindsight. The results show that many patients are undereducated about what to expect in therapy and how the process works. Patients who are angry or unhappy or uncertain about what the therapist is doing do not always say so. They need to know that it is not only permitted but an important part of the work to question the therapy and the behavior of the therapist, and to know, further, that if they do not speak up and the therapist argues, defends, and ignores the feedback, there is a serious problem. |
