Editors Shepherd (Carleton Univ., Ottawa), David Horn (Inst. of Popular Music, Univ. of Liverpool, U.K.), and Dave Laing (a London-based author and lecturer) have overseen a team of more than 250 international contributors to create this excellent, readable, and thoroughly useful five-volume set. It forms Part 2 of a seven-volume encyclopedic study of global popular music; Volume 1: Media, Industry, and Society and Volume 2: Performance and Production were published in 2004. These new volumes include general articles about the popular music of the world's regions and nations, including the Caribbean and Latin America, North America, Asia and Oceania, Africa and the Middle East, and Europe, with more detailed entries related to individual cities. For example, one can read an article on the history of the popular music of South America, another that zeroes in on the popular music of Brazil, and an even more narrowly focused article on the history and current popular music of Rio de Janeiro. The articles include wide-ranging bibliographical and discographical lists. Bottom Line While some previous single-volume and multivolume works have addressed the development and current state of popular music (e.g., The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music ), none has done so with this work's depth of scholarship and global reach. Scholarly, clearly written, and well indexed, it is an ideal reference set for any public or academic library.
