Also found in this volume are instructions for tracing pedigrees and deciphering ancient manuscripts, and rules for the appointment of liveries, etc. In the treatise before the reader, the author has endeavored to divest the noble science of armory of those frivolous technicalities and conjectural interpretations to be found in the works of the early heralds, which, by their abstruseness and uncertainty, tended to render the study so uninviting. The writer, remembering the difficulties he himself encountered in mastering the rudiments of the science, has endeavored to place himself in the position of the student, and has avoided throughout the use of terms which would not be intelligible to an uninitiated reader.
