miserable and guilty sinners, we may willingly bear contempt and reproaches for Thy sake, and glorying in nothing save only in Thee, may esteem ourselves lowly in Thy sight. Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but to Thy Name be the praise, for Thy loving mercy, and for Thy truth's sake. Amen.

Against Gluttony.

LORD JESU CHRIST, Mirror of abstinence, Who to teach us the virtue of abstinence didst fast forty days and forty nights; grant that serving Thee, and not our own appetites, we may live soberly and piously with contentment, without excess in food or in drink, that Thy Will being our nourishment, we may hunger and thirst after righteousness, and finally obtain from Thee that meat which endureth unto life eternal. Amen.

Against Lust.

LORD JESU CHRIST, Guardian of chaste souls and Lover of purity, Who wast pleased to take our nature, and to be born of a pure Virgin; mercifully look upon my infirmity. Make me a clean heart, O GOD, and renew a right spirit within me; help me to drive away all evil thoughts, to conquer every sinful desire, and so pierce my flesh with the fear of Thee, that this bosom enemy being overcome, I may serve Thee with a chaste body and please Thee with a pure heart. Amen.

Against Covetousness.

LORD JESU CHRIST, Who though Thou wast rich yet for our sakes didst become poor; grant that all over-eagerness and covetousness of earthly goods may die in us, and the desire of heavenly things may live and grow in us; keep us from

all idle and vain expenses, that we may have to give to him that needeth, and that giving not grudgingly nor of necessity, but cheerfully, we may be loved by Thee, and be made through Thy merits partakers of the riches of Thy heavenly treasure.

Against Envy.

MOST loving JESU, Pattern of all charity, Who makest all the commandments of the law to consist in love towards GOD and towards man; grant to us so to love Thee with all our heart, with all our mind, and all our soul, and our neighbour for Thy sake, that the grace of charity and brotherly love may dwell in us, and all envy, harshness, and illwill may die in us; and fill our hearts with love, kindness, and compassion, so that by constantly rejoicing in the happiness and good success of others, by sympathising with them in their sorrows, and putting away all harsh judgments and envious thoughts, we may follow Thee, Who art Thyself true and perfect Charity. Amen.

Against Sloth.

LORD JESU CHRIST, Who in the Garden didst pray so long and so fervently that Thy sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground; put away from us, we beseech Thee, all sloth and inactivity both of body and mind; kindle within us the fire of Thy love, and strengthen our weakness, that whatsoever our hand findeth to do we may do it with all our might, and that striving heartily to please Thee in this life, Thou mayest hereafter be our exceeding great reward,

PRAYERS FOR PARDON AND AMENDMENT.

MOST sweet LORD JESU CHRIST, I, an unworthy sinner, would call to Thy memory all the holy thoughts which have been Thine from eternity until now; above all, that one by which Thou, O Eternal WORD, didst will to become man.

O most merciful LORD, I pray Thee, from the bottom of my heart, to pardon me all the vain, foul, and evil thoughts which, up to this hour, I have ever entertained, or in any way have caused others to entertain, against or beside Thy Will.

Our FATHER.

MOST piteous LORD JESU CHRIST, I, a miserable sinner, would call to Thy memory all the good and saving words which Thou ever spakest when on earth.

I humbly pray Thee, O good JESU, to forgive me all the words which up to this hour I have uttered or caused others to utter, against Thy holy Will.

Our FATHER.

MOST sweet JESU CHRIST, I, an unworthy

MOST, yet redeemed by Thy precious Blood,

would call to Thy memory all the good works which Thou wroughtest on the earth for our salvation.

I beseech Thee, most piteous LORD, pardon me whatsoever, by my ill deeds, I have at any time knowingly or ignorantly committed, or have caused others to commit, against Thy law, and the glory of Thy Name.

And now, O most gracious LORD, direct and order all my thoughts, words, and works, according to Thy good pleasure, and to the praise of Thy

Name; and conform them to the perfect pattern of Thy most holy Life and Conversation. Thine I am, and will be, O LORD, in life and in death; into Thy hands I commend myself, and all that I am and have.

Our FATHER.

Devotions on the Passion.

LORD JESU CHRIST, Who hast said, No man can come to Me except he deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me; grant, we beseech Thee, that venerating Thy blessed Patience in bearing Thy Cross, and being borne upon it, I may bear all the crosses and trials of this valley of tears; that being purified by suffering, I may be admitted into Thy eternal rest, Who livest and reignest with the FATHER and the HOLY GHOST, ever One GOD, world without end.

Death and most bitter Passion was for me; let it not be without its fruit, and useless to me, a miserable sinner. By all Thy shame, by Thy most agonising Death and wounded Heart, give me Thy grace, now and in the hour of death. Amen.

GOOD Shepherd, CHRIST JESU, Who dost cleanse and feed Thy sheep with Thine own precious Blood; may the plenteous outpouring of Thy most holy Blood be to me and to all poor sinners comfort and salvation. Amen.

victory and the triumph won on the Cross

against Thy enemies and ours, save me from mine. Guard from all peril my soul and body. Give Thy Church concord and peace; to the departed, rest and peace; to sinners, repentance and forgiveness; grace and mercy to all. Amen.

JESU, our High Priest, Who offeredst to GOD

the FATHER a pure Oblation, mighty to reconcile sinners unto GOD; by the infinite merits of Thy Life, Thy Passion, and Death, make me die to the world, and live to Thee alone: and then let Thy servant depart in peace. Amen.

I

WILL lay me down at the foot of the Cross and know no rest save in Thee, O my LORD and SAVIOUR.

M

Prayer before the Cross.

OST gracious and loving JESU, I come to Thee for refuge. I return to Thee all-loving; but, O LORD, when I look on these Thy Wounds, and see Thy Crown of thorns, and remember that for my sake Thou didst suffer all these things, I am covered with shame and confusion. For it is I, even I, who smote Thee with these cruel Wounds; it is I who pressed these thorns into Thy sacred Temples; even I who nailed Thee to the Cross. Thy Love, Thy Mercy, Thy Pity,-Oh, who shall tell? It was I who sinned; and yet for me Thou didst endure the punishment. Thou hast paid the penalty of death for me. I was Thy enemy: by Thy Cross Thou makest me a son. I was a slave; but by Thy Blood Thou hast made me free. O that Thou wouldst kindle the flame of Thy love within me, that I might wholly burn with love for Thee; then will I, who owe Thee myself and all I have, gladly spend my very life for Thee, Amen,
