REDEMPTION.

Hymn.

Redemption by Christ.

1 DEAREST of all the names above,
My JESUS and my GOD,
Teach me to know Thy heav'nly love,
The value of Thy blood!

2 'Tis by the merits of Thy death
Thy FATHER'S love is seen;
"Tis by Thy interceding breath
The SPIRIT dwells with men,

3 Till GOD in human flesh I see,
My thoughts no comfort find;
The holy, just, and sacred Three,
Are terrors to my mind.

4 But if IMMANUEL'S face appear,
My hope, my joy begins;
His Name forbids my slavish fear,
His blood removes my sins.

5 While some on their own works rely,
And some of wisdom boast,
Thou great incarnate mystery,
In Thee is all my trust.

Hymn.

Redemption by Christ.

1 AND can it be that I should gain

An interest in the SAVIOUR's blood?
Died He for me, who caus'd His pain?

For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be

That Thou, my LORD, should'st die for me?

2 'Tis mystery all! Th' Immortal dies!
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the first-born seraph tries
To sound the depths of Love divine!
"Tis mercy all! let earth adore:
Let angel-minds inquire no more.
3 He left His FATHER'S throne above,
(So free, so infinite His grace !)
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam's helpless race:
"Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my GOD, it found out me!

4 Long my imprison'd spirit lay

Fast bound in sin and nature's night;
Thine eye diffus'd a quick'ning ray;

I woke; the dungeon flam'd with light!
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and follow'd Thee.

5 No condemnation now I dread,

JESUS, and all in Him, is mine! Alive in Him my living Head,

And cloth'd in righteousness divine, Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, thro' CHRIST, my own.

Hymn.

Redemption by Christ.-Intercession.

ARISE, my soul, arise,

Shake off thy guilty fears;
The bleeding Sacrifice.

In my behalf appears:

Before the throne my Surety stands;
My name is written on His hands.

He ever lives above

For me to intercede;
His all-redeeming love,

His precious blood to plead:
His blood aton'd for all our race,
And sprinkles now the throne of grace.

Five bleeding wounds He bears,
Receiv'd on Calvary;

They pour effectual prayers,

They strongly speak for me:
"Forgive him, O forgive," they cry,
"Nor let that ransom'd sinner die."

The FATHER hears him pray,

His dear anointed One;

He cannot turn away

The presence of His SON:

His SPIRIT answers to the blood,
And tells me I am born of God.

My GOD is reconcil'd;

His pardoning voice I hear:
He owns me for His child,

I can no longer fear;

With confidence I now draw nigh,
And FATHER, ABBA, FATHER, cry!

Hymn.

“It is finished.”

1 HARK! the voice of Love and Mercy Sounds aloud from Calvary! See! it rends the rocks asunder, Shakes the earth, and veils the sky! "It is finish'd," Hear the dying SAVIOUR cry!

2 It is finish'd! O what pleasure
Do these charming words afford!
Heavenly blessings, without measure,
Flow to us from CHRIST the LORD.
It is finish'd!

Saints, the dying words record.

3 Finish'd, all the types and shadows
Of the ceremonial law;

-Finish'd all that GOD had promis'd;
Death and hell no more shall awe.
It is finish'd!

Saints, from hence your comfort draw.

4 Tune your harps anew, ye seraphs;
Join to sing the pleasing theme:
All on earth, and all in heaven,
Join to praise IMMANUEL'S Name!
Hallelujah!

Glory to the bleeding LAMB!

[blocks in formation]

Harmony of Attributes in Redemption.

1 FATHER, how wide Thy glory shines! How high Thy wonders rise!

Known through the earth by thousand signs,
By thousands through the skies.

2 Those mighty orbs proclaim Thy power,
Their motions speak Thy skill:
And on the wings of every hour,
We read Thy patience still.

3 But when we view Thy strange design
To save rebellious worms,
Where vengeance and compassion join
In their divinest forms;

Here the wholę DEITY is known,
Nor dares a creature guess
Which of the glories brightest shone,
The justice or the grace.

5 Now the full glories of the LAMB
Adorn the heavenly plains;

Bright seraphs learn IMMANUEL'S Name,
And try their choicest strains.

60 may I bear some humble part
In that immortal song;

Wonder and joy shall tune my heart,
And love command my tongue.
