§ 87. This is used to measure surface, or any thing in which length and breadth are both considered.

1 inch § 88. A square is the space included by four equal lines, drawn perpendicular to each other, or so that the 1 square four angles are equal to each other; if each side of the inch square is 1 inch the figure is called a square inch.

8 feet If each side of the square be one yard, (three feet,) the figure .is called a square yard. It 2 will be seen that one square yard or 3 feet ii square contains 9 square feet. _ —

The number of small squares contained in any square figure, is always equal to the number of units in one side of the square figure multiplied by itself; thus in a square figure each side of which is 8 inches, there are 64 square inches; and in 1 foot square or 12 inches each way, there are 12 X 12 = M4 square inches.

§ 89. When we say 3 inches square, we mean a square figure, each side of which is 3 inches; but when we say 3 square inches, we mean 3 small squares, each an inch long, and an inch wide ; 3 inches square contains 9 square inches. — "_'

The difference between 4 inches square and 4 3 square inches'

square inches, is 12 square inches; the diflerence between 6 miles square and 6 square miles, is 30 square miles.

The number of small cubes contained in any large cube is always equalto the length, breadth and thickness multiplied together.
