This is the story of Newington College - from an idea that took root in Sydney's Wesleyan Methodist community to its current incarnation a century and a half later as a leading independent Uniting Church school, one that is open to all. Few institutions formed in the latter part of the nineteenth century in Sydney have proved as resilient as Newington in overcoming setbacks and uncertainties. This book tells of a college that is sandstone, bricks and mortar, that is a functioning school, but that is also something less tangible - a community that calls many of those who have attended the school to remain connected. It tries to tell the story not only from the viewpoint of administrators and staff, but also to give a voice to the boys who have attended its classes over the last one hundred and fifty years.
