Thoughts from students and teachers:"[Google Book Search] will make less well-known written works or hard-to-find research materials more accessible to students, teachers and others around the world. Geography will not hinder a student's quest to find relevant material...With Book Search, it's easy to imagine a history student at a small college in Nebraska using the Internet to find an out-of-print book held only by a library in New York...The advantages of Google's service are enormous, especially for smaller colleges without huge budgets for library purchases." "I run a nonprofit computer lab, and we have many unprivileged children in the lab. Just thought you would like to know that they discovered Google Book Search and loved it. They were using it for school work and showing others how to use it. Thanks for the great products!" "I am a Ph.D. student and Google Book Search is of great help to me. I can browse through books which are unavailable in Polish libraries." "I went to search for some very old books written in about 1968-9, which were a part of my HR training, and found them online at Google Book Search. I couldn't find them for last 7 months. Now I am definitely going to buy them." "Google is doing for books what butter did for toast." "As a graduate student working on some pretty heavy duty research, I think Google Books rocks. On multiple occasions, I've discovered just enough information to lead me to the library where I can get the whole text. I'm researching attitudes about marital and sexual attitudes in 17th century England. I typed in "shakespeare marriage" and, wham, up pops B. J. Sokol's Shakespeare, Law, and Marriage from Cambridge University Press, 2003. It's *perfect.* Would I have found it without Google Books? Perhaps. But I also might have found it much later, and it would not have the impact in my thinking and research it now does. Did Cambridge lose a sale? Um, no. I'm a grad student: I live in the library. But they did gain another reference, and a someday sale when I get a tenure track position (fingers crosssed). Additionally, they get heaps of good will because I know that they care about getting their catalog into circulation as conveniently as possible. That makes them cool. This has helped me discover information hidden where I otherwise would never find it. Thank you, thank you, thank you." |
