FAQ - Google Books on Barnes & Noble

The following FAQs apply to public domain books made available through BN.com and Barnes & Noble. If you have a general question about Google Books, please visit our Help Center.

Q: How do I get free public domain titles from Google Books?
A: Free titles are indicated by a "Get Free" button in place of the "Buy Now" button on BN.com. Barnes & Noble has partnered with Google Books to bring you half a million public domain titles for free.

Q: How is this content provided free of charge?
A: Only books in the public domain have been made available. A public domain book is one that was either never subject to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. It might be a novel like Herman Melville's Moby Dick (first published in 1851), an ancient work like Aristotle's observations on bees, or any one of the millions of scholarly, practical and entertaining works written since the days of clay tablets and papyrus scrolls.

Q: What is the quality of the content?
A: We carefully check the pages we scan, but occasionally errors do sneak through. We appreciate your patience as we constantly work to improve the quality of the books that we provide through Google Books.

Q: How do I report problems with the content?
A: To report a problem with a book, just use the contact form below. Please provide as much detail about the book as possible (ISBN, page number where the error occurs, etc.) so that we can investigate. While we do our best to resolve them, we are sometimes unable to fix individual book errors.

Q: Do I need a Google account to access these free titles from Google?
A: No, but you are required to log in to your Barnes & Noble.com account to access this feature. Creating a Barnes & Noble.com account is free.

Q: This book should (or shouldn’t be) in the public domain. Whom do I tell?
A: Please let us know by sending details about the title in question, using the form below.
