Checking/updating books

Print
Are you interested in updating the file for a book you've submitted to Google Books? Please take a look at these instructions for details.

On this page, we'll explain how to perform relevant account functions once you've taken the steps to submit your book to Google.

Why is my book marked as...

New: You've uploaded information about your book to your account, but we haven't recieved a copy of it yet. If you shipped a physical copy of your book to us, it may take some time for it to move out of this stage.

Received: We have a copy of your book or PDF file, and we're getting ready to scan and process it. It should take about a week or two for your book to be marked as 'Processing.'

Processing: We're working to scan and/or process your book for display on Google Books. Although we can't estimate the exact amount of time it will take for your books to go live, we will make every effort to get your content live on our site within a period of two months.

Live: Your book is browsable on Google Books. You can click the link next to its title to view it online.

Needs Action: your book won't go live unless one of the following issues is resolved.

Upload Book Information/ Fill in Missing Data

We have received wither a PDF file or hard copy of your book itself, but we're missing some basic information about it, which could be its title, author or territorial rights. Please read the "Editing a book" section below for instructions on how to add this information to your account.

Resolve Overlapping Claim

Another Google Books partner has already submitted the ISBN and territorial rights combination for the book you provided. If you're an author, we suggest getting in touch with your publisher directly. For information on filing an infringement notification under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, please contact us at books-copyright@google.com.

Unscannable

We were unable to scan your book successfully. It may be that your book did not meet our scanning guidelines. Please contact us before submitting your book again.

Verify Copyright

Please see our set of complete instructions on how to verify the copyright for your titles.

Editing a book

The following information can be edited from the 'Books' tab of your account. Log in to your account, click the 'Books' tab and click any editable field (in yellow) to update that entry directly in the table.

Title/Author: We hope these are self-explanatory! Please let us know if you find that the display of this information on Google Books is incorrect.

Buy Link: This custom URL will be displayed alongside your book when it appears on Google Books.

Territorial rights: Territorial rights are the countries for which you hold the rights to display the book on Google; enter 'all' for all countries, or visit this page for more complex cases.

Identifier (e.g. ISBN): This uneditable field corresponds to a value which identifies your book, such as its ISBN. If you have submitted a book without an ISBN, a Google-generated unique identifier will appear here.

The following information can be updated across all books from within your account, or on an individual basis by clicking on the pencil icon () alongside the book in question and editing the settings. You can also edit settings for a number of individual books at once by uploading a spreadsheet.

Books Browsable %: This figure determines the percentage of pages that a user will be able to view during a 30 day period. This value can be set between 20% and 100%. You can also specify your book to "100% with download" if you wish to also make a PDF available to users for download.

Show images: Determines whether images are restricted from displaying in a book on Google Books.

Creative Commons: Attributing a Creative Commons license to your book allows people to copy and distribute your work provided they give you credit — and only on the conditions you specify. More information can be found on this page.
