About the author (1980)

Louis R. Harlan is author of Booker T. Washington: The Making of a Black Leader, 1856-1901 and professor of history at the University of Maryland. Raymond W. Smock published, with Pete Daniel, A Talent for Detail: The Photographs of Miss Frances Benjamin Johnston, 1889-1910, and is the 1979 recipient of the Philip M. Hamer Award of the Society of American Archivists. Nan E. Wooddruff, a specialist in southern U.S. history, is now on the faculty of the College of Charleston.
