For five years I was a staunch opponent of gay rights and used the power of the Internet to grow a massive social media campaign to protect traditional marriage. Before long, I came to work with the National Organization for Marriage, the Nation’s leading traditional marriage advocacy organization. During that time, I proposed the idea of a cross-country bus tour to raise the siege in some of the most vulnerable states where traditional marriage was under attack. From July to August 2010, we traveled over 10,000 miles and visited twenty-one cities in seventeen states. It was on that bus tour that I actually met the people whose rights I had spent so many years trying to take away for the first time. In doing so, I came to see that everyone was deserving of the freedom and dignity to marry the person they love. This book is the story of that bus tour and the circumstances that changed me from an opponent to advocate for full civil marriage equality.
