The book was used as a text in the British schools until the 1950s, when changing attitudes toward colonialism led to its being replaced.

I was on the airplane returning from Iceland when I started this. So far, so good. I realized that a "child's" knowledge of English history is more than I have, so this has not been familiar ground to me. Dickens loves the Saxons. Read full review
