The church was organized in 1828 as the Methodist Protestant Church. In 1930 it was renamed the First Methodist Protestant Church of Lynchburg. The Methodist Episcopal, Methodist Episcopal (South), and Methodist Protestant denominations were united in 1939 as the First Methodist Church of Lynchburg. In 1968 the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren to become the United Methodist Church. Therefore, the church in Lynchburg became the First United Methodist Church of Lynchburg.

Rev "Joe" Lynch was my grandfather. I am the daughter of his adopted daughter, Betty Ann (Lynch) Dehorty. It has been a thrill to find this book! I am going to order it and give it to my daughter, Rev. Joe's great granddaughter, on her wedding day!
