For her it is a foregone conclusion that she will get an appointment in the city and savour the familiar throb of urban life. However she receives a setback when she is appointed to a bucolic outpost settling for a career she loathes. As she journeys to the small dusty town her struggle to self-realisation has just begun.

"A journey within" is a novel by Kenyan author - Florence Mbaya. The storyline focuses on the career, love and social life of the main character- Monika Saliku.
Monika finishes her undergraduate
studies with high hopes of acquiring a job in the city. She however has to settle for a career she dislikes - teaching, in addition to moving a remote part of the country other than the city.
What follows is a journey of self realisation and personal growth. towards the end of the novel, Monika is seen to have a deeper level of insight and broader outlook towards life.
To crown it all, she falls in love with Max, a fellow teacher, and with whom she hopes to make a home.
The author draws a comparison between expectations and reality and lays an emphasis on the importance of personal insight in combating life challenges.
