disclosure: I haven't read the whole book - really just happened to see the following section which prompted me to write this review.
"The non-elite French universities charge higher tuition than
their US American public university counterparts"
My wife (BTW American) registered in 2008 with one of these non-elite universities, and had to pay the regular 276euros (~$350) full year tuition.
I can't judge to the validity of the rest of the book, but I would take their data with a grain of salt...

Jon P. Alston is a professor of sociology at Texas A&M university.

Melanie Hawthorne is Professor of French at Texas A&M University. Her research focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century French literature, with special emphasis on prose fiction of the "Decadent" period and on women writers.
