This is an account of a shy country kid from rural Pennsylvania whose life is uprooted by the startling news of the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan - December 7, 1941 (a Sunday).
Within a year he, like millions of other young Americans, will be a part of the massive military force that must face the totalitarian forces of Japan, Italy and Germany. This account is not so much the sheer "nuts and bolts" of military service, but rather an account of the massive transformation or metamorphosis that must be made in order for this soldier to be "ready" for the horrendous comabt without "losing it all" - life, limb and sanity.
Somewhere, somehow during this journey, he will come face to face with the question of LUCK, COINCIDENCE OR MIRACLE and he will have to find an answer.
