A Swedish Dilemma: A Liberal European Nation's Struggle with Racism and Xenophobia, 1990-2000
A Swedish Dilemma examines a liberal European nation's negative reactions to a growing number of minorities in its midst. Careful to qualify that Swedes did not react differently than members of other European societies, the book proceeds by looking at the deep roots of xenophobia in the Nordic nation. Fear from and insecurity about the ramifications that might result from multiculturalism led to many instances of violence and hostility toward refugees and immigrants. Politicians were not up to the task of meeting the challenges posed by an upset indigenous population. Therefore the study relates their feeble responses to a great challenge and opportunity for Sweden. Despite a century-long progression of many governmental social programs, parliaments and prime ministers were rendered motionless in trying to balance the desires of reactionaries and the needs of newcomers. The book also focuses on such consequences of inactivity as ghettos, unemployment, gang wars, murders, as well as a resurgence of fascism. A Swedish Dilemma opens up a new look at the real Sweden and reveals a side heretofore completely missing from positive images so characteristic of what this nation has tried to project to the outside world.
