About the author (1992)

Sir John Ure started his diplomatic career in Russia and went on to be ambassador to countries as diverse as Cuba, Brazil, and Sweden. He has written six books of travel and historical biography. For the past eight years he has been chairman of the judges of the prestigious Thomas Cook/Daily Telegraph Travel Book of the Year award. He is a regular contributor to both the Times Literary Supplement and the Sunday Telegraph. He frequently visits Russia and Central Asia as a guest lecturer. He lives in Kent, England.
