I have a rule of thumb about buying cookbooks - if I get even one recipe that becomes a family all-time favorite, the book was worth buying. So far, with "A Fistful of Lentils", I am up to about 20 recipes that my family can't imagine living without or having a party without, and I am still working my way through the recipes. All the recipes are clearly written, easy to follow, and yield results that are unbelievable. I couldn't even begin to choose a favorite, but the bazirgan, spinach-cheese phyllo pie, chicken with cumin, chicken with apricots, Syrian rice with orzo, and the amazing potatoes are on my table constantly. At the same time, the book also reads like a wonderful memoir/history. Ms. Abadi is a natural writer, and her entire family comes alive before your eyes.
This is one cookbook that really gets a workout in my home, and I have already recommended it to everyone I know who loves to cook and eat, and it has become one of my standard birthday/special occasion gifts. A must-have as far as I'm concerned.
