The author of 'A guard within' was not Sarah duchess of York, though she may have belonged to the same family. Sarah Ferguson the author of 'A guard within' ended her life about 1980 after a brave and creative struggle to live. She was in analysis with Dr D W Winnicott, a celebrated psychoanalyst and author, who died suddenly during her treatment, adding another bereavement to those she had already experienced. 'A guard within' was written as part of her work of mourning for him.
