A Guide to English Illustrated Books, 1536-1603, Volume 1
Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies, 1998 - Art - 754 pages
With the publication of this valuable work, all pictorial material in English books printed in the Tudor period will have been documented. Beginning with Edward Hodnett's earlier work, English Woodcuts 1480-1535, ends the Guide documents more than 5,000 pictures and diagrams as they appear in 1,800 publications. The Guide is organized by book entry. Each entry lists and describes the images within a given book and then discloses the different uses of the woodcuts and engravings by enumerating their repetitions within the publication and by tracing their reuses in other publications of the period. The relation of image to text is explained in a headnote to each book entry. This method uncovers what previously has been unknown and in so doing changes our knowledge of the visual life of the time. Readers will now be able to distinguish the commonly seen image from the rare one, to understand the changing subjects of images over the period, and to see the way different printers deployed the woodcuts they owned. The Guide includes a complete subject index and four appendices. One appendix shows the reuses of the woodcuts catalogued by Hearten; the other three organize the stock cuts of labors of the months, ships, and Zodiac Man. There are listings of diagrams, of monograms on woodcuts, and of primers, and publishers. A new essay by Catherine Delano-Smith discusses maps in books during third period. The Guide is a milestone in the history of book illustrations. It is a necessary reference work for early modern England and an important contribution to the fields of the history of the printed book, British art history, and social history.
