The report contains a newly derived forecast-type stability index using measured thermodynamic atmospheric sounding data that sensed the atmosphere during a mid-west severe storm/tornado outbreak. This derived Lag index (JLI) was geared to be a forecast type of index, that its resultant values may indicate a tornado storm possibily occuring within the next few hours. The JLI was later independently tested against another different set of mid-western severe weather/tornado sounding measurements taken years later. The JLI outperformed the other stability indices for this later severe storm case study. Note that the JLI may not perform well used for tornado study in other regions of the Country.
