Scientific Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Sociology - Communication, University of Minho (Social Sciences), course: Communication Sciences, language: English, abstract: Understanding Media; Extensions of Man is a pioneering and important book of Marshall McLuhan, which was published in 1964 and valued by the authorities, writers, publishers, and Media. It has been protecting its fame and value by those who study and in the field of Media and Communication Science. To be able to understand what Media are and how we are surrounded by them in the 21st century, it is still a vital book as it brings a new and refreshing approach to Media studies. During our read, McLuhan underlines a definite phrase frequently: ‘’For Media, as extensions of our physical and nervous systems... ‘’ Actually, that phrase consists of the main theme of this book. In the book, it is explained that how Media take place in our lives and give a shape to us in certain levels as well as how humanity need and create Media based on their needs. The book is separated into two parts ‘’Part 1’’ and ‘’Part 2’’. Briefly, the author mentions some general information about Media and talks about hot and cold mediums in the first part when he elaborates Media as known as ‘’the Extensions of Man’’ by classifying them such as press, photography, telephone etc in the second part of the book. I am going to review the book by dividing it into two sections because it seems to be easier and better to explain in a clear way. [...]
