The monograph "ACHALASIA OF THE CARDIA" includes the most recent data regarding this condition. Separate chapters accompanied by ample and rigorously cited bibliographical references discuss the most up-to-date information on the nosological assignment, etiology, histopathology, diagnosis, natural history and evolution of this condition, the work involves descriptions of the classical and modern surgical therapeutical procedures, (illustrated by rich iconography), of the surgical approaches (abdominal vs. thoracic) and of the validity of the antirflux techniques and of the association with complementary gastric drainage. Special attention was given to the treatment of the sigmoid esophagas, with a synopis of the literature data of the conservatory (cardioplasty), vs. radical (esophagectomy with esophagoplasty) therapeutical procedures in this advanced form of achalasia. Through accurate assessment of the outcome of the surgical treatment in a series of 80 patients treated in the University Clinic Hospital of Bucharest, we attempt to contribute to the clarification of certain controversial issues, involving the priority and efficacy of various therapeutic methods in cardial achalasia.
