Akassa you mi: an historical drama
On the 29th of January 1895, troops of the Nembe Kingdom attacked the premises of the Royal Niger company at Akassa. Where the British saw a raid the Nembe people themselves saw it as an attack to ensure economic survival for their people, and maintanence of their sovereignty. It is against this background that this play, written by one of Nigeria's most acclaimed writers and performed first in 1977, is set.
