About the author (1993)

John Henry Newton was an Englishman, Anglican clergyman and former slave-ship captain. He was the co-author with poet William Cowper of many hymns including his most famous one Amazing Grace. Newton is best known for aiding and helping to inspire William Wilberforce to stay in Parliament and complete his mission to end slavery in the British Empire. The town of Newton, Sierra Leone, was named after John Newton.
