This monograph summarizes the research activities in medical microbiology at 19 leading medical schools and institutes in Japan. An emphasis is placed on ongoing work in infectious diseases and immunology. However, other disciplines including cell biology, physiology, and biochemistry, are covered when encountered. In addition, background notes on the development of medicine in Japan, the medical educational process, and the Japanese health care system are provided. Names and addresses of the researchers whose work is described in the monograph are provided in an Appendix to facilitate communication, and comprehensive indices are included. (Author).
