One of the unexpected facts about the Old City of Jerusalem is the fact that a handful of Armenians( clergy and laic) own a fifth of the real state inside the walled city and share with the mighty Roman Catholic and the Greek Orthodox churches, equal ownership of the important sites of Christs life in Palestine. John Rose presents an interesting story of some of the Armenian families that, dating back to pre-Crusader days, has persevered the integrity of the Armenian faith, culture and language..His eye-witness account of the 1948 War which resulted in the occupation of most of the City by Israeli forces is unique. John and I were classmates at St Georges School. This is a must reading for anyone who wants to live a page in Jerusalem`s bloody history.
